In the late 1960s and early 1970s, accessing the music you loved was quite a challenge. The repertoire of music on the radio was limited, live performances were often unaffordable, and discovering new music through friends was a bit of a lottery. However, the concept of low-price compilation albums, known as Samplers, changed the game. These albums showcased a variety of artists signed to a record label, providing an affordable way for music enthusiasts to explore new sounds.
CBS released one of the first Samplers, "The Rock Machine Turns You On," in 1968, featuring tracks from artists like Spirit, The Zombies, and Leonard Cohen. Other labels like Liberty, Warner Brothers, Elektra, Atlantic, Island Records, Harvest and Vertigo followed suit offering iconic collections like "You Can All Join In", "Picnic", "Nice Enough To Eat" & "The Age Of Atlantic". These Samplers introduced listeners to a wide range of music, from progressive rock to folk and reggae. Music by established artists would sit alongside lesser known and newer acts. It was an eclectic treasure trove of discovery. We released our own cassette culture samplers in the halcyon days of the early 80's and revived the idea as we released CD's in the early 2000's with discs like "Chuck Out The Chintz", "A Falling A Spread" and "Crust" ... here's the first in a new series of falling A samplers for the digital generation. |
ArchiveThese pages represent my best attempt at a musical journal, travelogue, archive record of my musical landscape and everything I have been involved in over the years. It features celebrated projects to undeveloped ideas, sketchpad moments, memories and general stuff that has been part of my creative endeavours and the Falling A Records story. I am attempting to place things in chronological order though as time passes and I trawl the crates in my loft, I am discovering that my record keeping has been quite vague at times. Please feel free to interact and correct where necessary. The page also serves as the archive page for the website and is where we post our various announcements etc., Archives
