Two Headed Emperor and the Blackwater Estuary...

30/7/2018

Myself and Pete, took a road trip to the Balckwater Estuary on 30th July, 2018. It was the first time we had been there together since 1981. The area was an important part of my growing up, my grandparents lived in Maldon for a number of years running the youth hostel in the 1950's and early 1960's, later they moved to Goldhanger and later still to Tollesbury. My grandfather started a sailing centre sometime in the 1950's and was awarded the Empire medal one year for doing something or other ... nobody is really quitye sure and my grandfather in his humility would reportedly just shrig his shoulders when asked about it.

Anyway, we mapped out an album whilst putting the finishing touches to "The Last Time We Did This", we had some specific ideas for the sound palette and where the inspiration for this particular album was coming from. In fact it had been something we had discussed many years earlier but never quite got around to it as other projects frequently took precedence.

The road trip was to get inspiration, discuss and develop the various ideas we had, do some field recordings capturing the atmosphere of the boatyards and sleepy salt marshes, take some pictures and some video footage.

The outline for "Goldhanger Creek" was created although it had a different title at the time  and a different track listing as we sketched out the titles of the tracks, the sound we wanted and a few lyrics here and there.

One of the tracks morphed into what would be come a whole new album which at this time of writing is going to most likely appear at the beginning of 2021, another track became three tracks which kick started a whole new album ... probably will reach you sometime in 2021. Two more albums were born on the back of the sessions which are both being worked on and later 2021 not being an unrealistic expected target for release.

Out of Goldhanger Creek also came the current album "Tales From A Mariners Pen". Two of the tracks "Oyster Beds" & "Just A Whisper" were for a radio session but we liked them so much that we wanted to get them out quickly. "Shipwrecked And Stranded" we had worked on with the idea of it being for "Goldhanger Creek" but it just wasn't sitting right with us. The mid section was added and suddenly we had a great opener. "The Village Of Plough & Sail" had started as the first version 0f "Return To Tollesbury" but we felt it wasn't right until we revisited it in the light of the new sessions. "Visionaries, Netmenders & Stargazers" had a the nucleus of a great idea but had been marred by a vocal performance that just wasn't right. We revisited the track once we saw we had another album in the making and it just clicked. "Cabin Fever" was like a coda statement made up of edits, outtakes and some brilliant composition by Pete to pull it all together.

Two Headed Emperor are in a prolific period of creativity with next few albums mapped out and lot's of twists and turns along the way. The current crop were inspired by the roadtrip, have been moved along by lockdown and although there is still work to do to bring the rest of the current crop to fruition our heads and hearts are beginning to turn in a new direction.

"Tales From A Mariner's Pen" is our fourth album, we are heading out of this rather pastoral territory and into something a bit more urban. You might begin to get a few hints across the next couple of albums before it hits you  hard. I hope that you will be ready.

Two Headed Emperor update

We have been amused to discover some interest in our former local newspaper from the early days of Falling A Records (see above article) .
We have also been receiving plenty of attention from around the world with some considerable amount of airplay on some excellent radio programmes.

Here are a few that we have been made aware of ...

Adventures in Plasticland
Spaceman Stan delivers an epic 3 hour programme filled with mind expanmding progressive, psychedelic, garage and acid rock. Quite where Two Headed Emperor fits in all of this we are not sure although the Happy Medium sits comfortably alongside Interstellar Overdrive by Pink Floyd, May Blitz, Jethro Tull and a treasure trove of others. Thanks for the attention Stan!

Lord Litters Magic Music Box
The much respected Lord Litter has been pillaging the album for brooadcast on a number of his Magic Music Box shows. We are also very grateful for his kind words.

"boom... well what can I say .... listened ,... red Tim's review ...could not say it any better ... had a online discussion recently how boring the usual update ROCK became .. well... here is the UNusual update"

and being a man of many words Lord Litter also commented on Tim Jones' review of the Happy Medium "I was reading your review of Two Headed Emperor and I think it totally hit the spot! .... I think the release is a complete exception in today's *underground*" ... Tim's review can be found here

Peter Andrews Friday and Sunday shows on Raiders FM
As far as we are aware, Peter was first of the mark to give the Two Headed Emperor a hearing on his excellent Friday album rock show. His enthusiasm is appreciated. I even logged in and joined in the chat during the programme with the listening community. Nice feature.

Adelaide's Coast FM 88.7

Gillie Dee hosts a programme which I believe is called Coast Connections on Sunday morning 9am- Midday local time. He was certainly very complimentary when he received the album. So Two Headed Emperor have been heard in Australia !

Starship Overflow
Garry Lee has been a long time friend of Falling A Records and always been supportive of everything we have brought to his attention. He said that the album title was one of his favourite of the year so far! Garry, we already have the title for our next album and you will love it but we are not telling you yet!

The Reverend Rabbit, River Gibbs FM
Our very good friend and fellow sojourner the Reverend Rabbit has been heavily featuring us on his regular show. We have a treat in store for listeners of that show soon in that way as we are planning a Two Headed Emperor exclusive session. Prepare to have your mind blown and hear another facet to the Emperor!

The Two Headed Emperor has been busy in the studio working on a single which we will release in the autumn, an e.p. and our next album. We will tell you more about that in due course 侘寂

These pages represent my best attempt at a musical journal, travelogue, archive record of my musical landscape and everything I have been involved in over the years. It features celebrated projects to undeveloped ideas, sketchpad moments, memories and general stuff that has been part of my creative endeavours and the Falling A Records story. I am attempting to place things in chronological order though as time passes and I trawl the crates in my loft, I am discovering that my record keeping has been quite vague at times. Please feel free to interact and correct where necessary. The page also serves as the archive page for the website and is where we post our various announcements etc.,
It's very much a work in progress.
