MILES DAVIS - PORGY & BESS
This album was not only my introduction to the music of Miles Davis, but the whole genre of jazz and subsequently opened the door to multiple sub genres and spin offs. Hearing this was like opening Pandora's Box.
Jazz had always been part of our household growing up. My dad played the trombone in a jazz orchestra and had a passion and deep love for jazz. To be honest as a small kid, I didn't pay much attention. My ears were more atuned to pop and as I got older, rock music grabbed my attention.
This record was in our home for as long as I could remember but I think I first put it on the turntable of my own volition at about the age of 11. I was drawn in. There was more to this music that met the ear. This opened doors to all kinds of musical possibilities. It was the beginning of a fascination with the music of Miles Davis which lives to this day. This is still one of my "go to" albums.
This was Davis' second collaboration with Gil Evans and is often cited as the best work of their collaborative endeavours. The arrangement and performance of "Summertime" is simply sublime but it is one of those rare albums where every track is delivers and is over all too soon.
