Two Headed Emperor - Mad Magic and Fire (Falling A Records)
"Mad Magic and Fire," the latest release from the art rock duo Two Headed Emperor, consisting of Peter Ashby and Barry Lamb, marks their 11th album in a musical partnership that has spanned nearly five decades. Known for their ability to defy genre boundaries and create a unique sonic experience, Ashby and Lamb deliver yet another compelling entry into their eclectic discography.
From the very first notes of the title track, "Mad, Magic and Fire," it's clear that this album is not just a listening experience but an auditory journey. The gentle acoustic guitar and ethereal vocals of Georgia Lamb set the stage for Barry Lamb's haunting lead vocals, underscored by Ashby's intricate electric guitar and percussion. The instrumentation is lush and layered, with flutes and melodicas weaving through the soundscape, creating an atmosphere that is both mystical and grounded in folk tradition.
The album's second track, "Clumsy Oaf," introduces a more psychedelic tone with its lumbering rhythm and sitar-like sounds, showcasing the duo's ability to blend various musical influences seamlessly. This track, like many on the album, plays with tempo and dynamics, suddenly bursting into life, much like a psychedelic fever dream. "Stones and Rings," with its shimmering electric guitar and violin, evokes images of ancient rituals and standing stones, further enhancing the album's connection to rural folklore and pagan traditions.
One of the standout tracks, "The Landlady’s Lair," features hypnotic vocal repetitions of "round and round" and lyrics that paint a vivid picture of an eerie, possibly haunted, space. The melodica and layered vocals create an unsettling yet strangely captivating ambiance. "Cedars" continues this theme of myth and mystery, hinting at secrets hidden in the periphery of vision, while "Leading the Blind" suggests a disorienting journey through a world that feels otherworldly, perhaps even surreal.
"The Dark Game" lures the listener into a picture of a fallen and rather broken world where there is a sinister otherworldly force at play. It is a hypnotic and haunting deep dive into the ephemeral aspects of life, emphasising the impermanence of culture, revealing moments of clarity amidst the confusion. The lyrical penumbras represent the dim but discernible light of understanding, bringing a sense of purpose into focus confronting the shattered illusions and false narratives that have held the protagonist captive.
"A Dance of Shadows," the longest track on the album, is a mesmerizing eight-minute odyssey. Barry Lamb's vocal delivery here is reminiscent of Peter Hammill, adding a touch of theatricality to the proceedings. Just past the halfway mark Peter Ashby unleashes a scintillating electric guitar solo, one of the album’s many high points. The song’s structure and mood shifts mirror the unpredictability of the album as a whole, which constantly keeps the listener guessing.
"Mad Magic and Fire" is an album that revels in its eclecticism. From medieval motifs to Eastern influences, from progressive rock to jazz and folk, Two Headed Emperor crafts a sound that is both retro and contemporary. This is music that could easily have found a home on the early '70s catalogs of labels like Vertigo, Charisma, island, Deram or Harvest, yet it feels completely at home in today's musical landscape.
The production quality is top-notch, with each instrument and vocal line clear and purposeful, enhancing the album's narrative and thematic elements. The use of field recordings, flutes, saxophones, and various other textures add depth to the arrangements, creating a rich tapestry of sound that invites repeated listens.
"Mad Magic and Fire" is not an album that reveals all its secrets in a single sitting. It demands—and rewards—multiple listens, each one uncovering new layers and meanings. In an age where music is often consumed in bite-sized pieces, this album stands as a testament to the power of long-form artistic expression. For fans of experimental music and those willing to take a leap into the unknown, Two Headed Emperor offers a strange, intriguing world well worth exploring.
In conclusion, "Mad Magic and Fire" is a superb addition to Two Headed Emperor's impressive catalog. It is both innovative and timeless, a musical maze that challenges and delights in equal measure. This is an album that not only holds up to repeated listening but practically demands it, each spin revealing new dimensions of the duo's creative vision. A must-listen for fans of avant-prog, psychedelic music, and anyone with a taste for the bizarre and beautiful.

Two Headed Emperor - Clean Your House (Falling A Records)
"Clean Your House" marks the 10th installment in the Two Headed Emperor discography. Characterized by its unpredictability, the album may come across as less immediately accessible compared to much of their previous work. However, it possesses a magnetic quality that captivates the listener, making it difficult to disengage before reaching the conclusion and even prompting subsequent listens.
The album delves into profound themes, exploring spirituality, the existence of an outsider on society's periphery, and the conflict between conformity to societal norms and embracing authenticity. Its complexity is subtle, incorporating avant-garde musical arrangements while maintaining an overall infectious appeal.
While there are nods to earlier albums like "Omnishambles" and "The Last Time We Did This," "Clean Your House" predominantly represents a bold new direction for Two Headed Emperor. Drawing parallels to the likes of Faust and evoking thoughts of Captain Beefheart, the album navigates the realms of Krautrock, Art Rock, and Rock In Opposition. Positioned firmly in the underground scene, it offers a rewarding exploration for those willing to venture into its depths.

Two Headed Emperor – Wireless Of The North – Falling A Records
This CD is a wonderful addition to the innovative, influential and rapidly growing Falling A Records catalogue. The tracks on the album are more than observations, they are almost laments for this increasingly uncertain and unstable world in which the majority of us are trying to survive. It would be nice to somehow retain our sanity. There is always HOPE however. This music makes you question things and that is always a good idea to my mind. What’s the old adage? Don’t trust the ones who think they’ve found the truth.
Trust rather those who are looking for it. This is Progressive music whilst maintaining its original essence of DIY/Punk sensibilities, intelligently carried forth into the 21 st century.
This music is both uplifting and at times disturbing. It makes you feel things, images that are conjured up by Two Headed Emperor’s sonic art. Ace guitars from Peter Ashby, as always and Barry Lamb’s lyrics and vocal style are inimitable. Experimental, creative soundscapes from the duo meld the whole album together in an extremely interesting and appealing way whilst keeping the song aspect of the music to the fore. As always with the mighty THE or rather Two Headed Emperor, you will be enhanced, not in an AI sort of way but in a human, empathetic, sonically inspired one. The excellent and truly atmospheric black and white artwork for the CD serves perfectly, dark and mysterious, with questions as to its meaning in the context of the challenging music contained within.
Falling A Records continue to fly the flag for truly Independent, underground artists and Wireless Of The North by Two Headed Emperor exemplifies this. Intriguing stuff, excellent production throughout and oh yeah… Shan’t, Can’t, Won’t is an alternative hit with a killer of a three word chorus…

Two Headed Emperor – Wireless Of The North
Two Headed Emperor's musical journey has taken a thrilling new twist, and their evolution has been subtly foreshadowed in their recent releases. With their latest offering, "Wireless Of The North," the band has shed layers of complexity to reveal a raw and potent sound that echoes the essence of their post-punk roots. This album, embodying the spirit of a four-piece ensemble, centers around guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, adorned with occasional 80's synth embellishments and distinct woodwind elements.
Lead vocalist Barry Lamb candidly admits that "Wireless Of The North" captures the true essence of Two Headed Emperor as a quartet (even though there's only two of us).
The album steers clear of excess, channeling a sonic experience that feels akin to their seminal post-punk origins.
There's a palpable nod to the pioneers of the genre such as The Pop Group, The Slits, The Fall, PiL, and Gang Of Four, with glimpses of early Bauhaus artistry intertwined. The vitality, urgency, and vibrancy that characterized the early 80s new wave movement are effortlessly revived in this album. The tracks resonate with an energy that would have made them a perfect fit for John Peel's iconic radio show back in 1979.
However, while the musical ambiance might invoke nostalgia, the lyrical content is unabashedly grounded in the 21st century. Two Headed Emperor employs their music as a vessel for piercing critique, casting a sharp spotlight on modern culture, power structures, and the establishment. The album brims with scathing commentary that resonates deeply in today's world, offering listeners a contemplative journey through the turmoil of our times.
The recent "Hit Parade" EP may not have gained the mainstream visibility that could potentially shake up the cultural landscape, but it's evident that Two Headed Emperor isn't preoccupied with such aspirations.
Their message is tailored for those with ears to hear, those who crave substance, those seeking lyrical depth and a resonant reflection of the world around them.
In a musical era where contemporary production values often dilute the essence of bygone sounds, Two Headed Emperor stands firm, preserving the integrity and dynamism of their post-punk lineage.
In sum, "Wireless Of The North" is a contemporary manifesto of post-punk revival. It's an album that bridges the past and the present, harkening back to a golden era while boldly addressing the challenges of our own.
With its stripped-down, unadulterated instrumentation and candidly critical lyrics, Two Headed Emperor's latest opus is an invitation to introspection, an auditory testament to the enduring power of music to incite thought and spark change.

Two Headed Emperor – Hit Parade (EP)
In an era where musical innovation often leans on futuristic electronic sounds, Two Headed Emperor's EP "Hit Parade" emerges as a refreshing throwback to the late 70s and early 80s. This EP is a poignant musical journey that captures the essence of post-punk while reflecting on the unchanging turmoil of the political landscape.
The EP's inception story, rooted in the duo's admiration for past musical eras, sets the tone for the nostalgia-driven experience. Drawing inspiration from their earliest recordings as Frenzid Melon and the insane picnic, "Hit Parade" exudes an air of familiarity while presenting a contemporary perspective on age-old themes. The echoes of the past, coupled with the disillusionment of the present, create a powerful backdrop for this musical endeavor.
At the heart of "Hit Parade" lies a profound sense of urgency and intensity. Despite being stripped down intentionally during the recording process, the instrumentation manages to strike a perfect balance between experimental and infectious. The EP's 4 tracks, formed part of a 12 track session over a mere 10 days. The four songs on the EP present a musical tapestry that captures the essence of the post-punk era's raw energy.
Lyrically, "Hit Parade" is a visceral journey through grief, disappointment, and a simmering hope for change. The concise lyricism, channels the emotional turbulence of the past and present political climate. The songs masterfully convey the universal frustration with those in power who continually prove themselves to be poor stewards of trust. Each track is not only a commentary on the societal struggles but also a call for awakening.
This is a tantalizing teaser for the upcoming album, promising to expand upon the thematic and sonic palette presented here. Two Headed Emperor has managed to create a musical time capsule that pays homage to its inspirations while addressing contemporary concerns.
In a world where the wheels of change continue to turn, "Hit Parade" stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to reflect, provoke, and inspire. Two Headed Emperor's ability to capture the spirit of post-punk and infuse it with contemporary resonance results in an EP that both tugs at the heartstrings and sparks a fire for transformation.

Two Headed Emperor – Hit Parade – Falling A Records
Dissonance leads us through the huge doors of the musically fortified landscape of the Two Headed Emperor. Indeed, something extremely interesting this way comes! Barry Lamb and Peter Ashby invite us to a crazy sonic circus, introducing us to a cacophony of sound and solid riffs. At times whilst listening, I detected some essences of PIL with a liberal sprinkling of Captain Beefheart but there’s still that King Crimson/Henry Cow thing going on, alongside so much more. Is this just me trying to grasp onto musical straws? As always with the inimitable musical output of Two Headed Emperor, Hit Parade consists of highly original, unique material. Insightful lyrics and sometimes downright scary vocal delivery from Barry Lamb truly resonate in a world currently teetering on the edge. Excellent guitar from Peter Ashby and melodic bass playing throughout, grounds the four songs on the EP, allowing all of the lovely sonic emulation to swirl around the centre. I particularly love the title track of the new Hit Parade EP by Two Headed Emperor. Once again, wonderful guitar textures and an extremely catchy bass line make for a classic anti-pop anthem. It has all the makings of a song in the Hit Parade, paradoxically speaking. This music is both mystical and magical, striving for a deeper understanding in an uncertain world. As always, tremendous stuff!

Two Headed Emperor And Alessandro Monti – We’re Not On The Moon Yet!
This masterwork is a collaboration between British Progressive/Artrock band Two Headed Emperor and Venetian Indie artist Alessandro Monti. Although the kitchen sink is not present on these recordings, I am pleased to inform you that Peter Ashby’s washing machine on spin is. The broad array of natural sounds, musical instruments and goodness knows what else on this album is mind boggling, fronted as ever by the thought provoking and amazing vocals of Barry Lamb. Listening to this three pronged collaboration of a band is like discovering Neptune’s trident on the moon. A fish out of water as it were but perfectly placed in a dreamlike landscape.
The CD artwork reminds me of the covers of the mid 20th Century Astounding Stories Magazines which is indeed apt as there are so many astounding sounds on this work of art. This is a double CD helping of challenging, yet heart warming ambience, grooves and sonic explorations. This kind of thing is food for the soul as far as I am concerned. It is a departure from the previous Two Headed Emperor albums and yet it is still very much connected by a silver compositional chord to the poetically astral progressive music that this band creates; Otherworldly, imaginative, inventive, determined, and a treat for the ears. There are many beautiful and intriguing moments and the conjuring of lyrical imagery on wonderful songs like "Nameless Souls", a thing of beauty and an essential addition to your music collection if you like real music.
This is new and follows no fads, something so sadly lacking in a lot of such derivative, rehashed musical output these days. We’re Not On The Moon Yet! is truly a breath of fresh air, art for art’s sake with the best of intentions. Like a voyage of discovery, this album opens up the more you hear it. Like so much of Two Headed Emperor’s work, the more you hear this album, the more you hear in it. Excellent production and guitar work from Peter Ashby, this music doesn’t have a category, it just is. Originality is the key word here. These three musicians work so very well together, creating a superbly atmospheric sound and I eagerly await their next release.

Two Headed Emperor with Alessandro Monti - We're Not On The Moon yet (Falling A Records 2023)
Alessandro Monti with Two Headed Emperor - We Are Not On The Moon yet (Diplodiscs 2023)
Prepare to embark on a sonic journey like no other as Falling A Records and Diplodiscs proudly present the release of not one, but two extraordinary double albums. The masterminds behind this groundbreaking project, Two Headed Emperor and Alessandro Monti, have joined forces to create an immersive experience that pushes the boundaries of musical improvisation to new heights.
In a bold departure from conventional approaches, Barry Lamb, Peter Ashby, and Alessandro Monti embarked on a creative experiment that would shape the very fabric of their collaboration. With each musician crafting stems placed into 25 numbered folders, the stage was set for an extraordinary process of musical alchemy. Absent of specific instructions, the artists independently composed 25 tracks, utilizing at least one stem from each musician within every folder. The result? Three sets of 25 tracks, born from the same ingredients yet possessing distinct identities that intertwine harmoniously.
"We Are Not On The Moon Yet" manifests in two captivating versions, showcasing the individual artistic visions of the creators. Two Headed Emperor's English iteration, skillfully curated by Peter Ashby under the project direction of Barry Lamb, unveils a sonic tapestry that bears the hallmarks of their unique sound. Simultaneously, Alessandro Monti and Two Headed Emperor present the Italian version, a testament to Alessandro's singular perspective on the tracks. Both albums stand as testament to the boundless possibilities of collaboration, honoring the connection between the artists while celebrating their individuality.
Yet, the journey doesn't end here. Another version of the album is on the horizon, curated by the esteemed Chris Cutler, a legendary figure known for his work with iconic bands such as Henry Cow, Art Bears, The Residents and Pere Ubu, among others. This forthcoming release will further illuminate the diverse nature of unity, showcasing the tracks' multifaceted lives, all rooted in the same creative seeds.
"We Are Not On The Moon Yet" defies categorization, defragments traditional musical boundaries, and unifies three remarkable musicians in an unparalleled collaboration. Each album possesses its own distinct voice, yet collectively they form a testament to the artistry and innovation at play. Contemplating the myriad possibilities presented by the 75 tracks and beyond, the artists recognized the challenge of capturing their essence within a conventional LP format. Instead, they chose to honor the tracks' unique sequencing and opted to release two sets of mixes. Pete's collection, akin to the signature sound of Two Headed Emperor, intertwines seamlessly with the diverse and atmospheric perspective offered by Alessandro's mixes. These two double albums stand as a testament to the sheer breadth of their creative endeavor, with future releases and remnants from the sessions still to come.
"We Are Not On The Moon Yet" is a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and the limitless potential of musical exploration. Brace yourself for a sonic odyssey that defies expectations, captivates the senses, and elevates the very essence of artistic expression.

Two Headed Emperor - Selling Christmas (Falling A Records 2022)
In a country that is falling apart at the seams and nothing works anymore, the majestic Two Headed Emperor shines a light on just what Christmas means for the downtrodden. First of all, they are most definitely in debt. The little elves sprinkle their tacky fairy dust in an attempt to entertain whilst we try to cope with it all. It’s what Jesus would have wanted!
Like a society of friends, The Two Headed Emperor has met up with Hatfield and The North, Captain Beefheart and The Fall for a chat with Keith Emerson and Thijs van Leer about how mental it all is, especially poignant and highlighted by Christmas in Santa’s grotto where the Sultan, dressed as Saint Nicholas smacks his lips, swings his enchanted hips and tries to sell us Christmas. It’s a dodgy sales pitch when we all seem to be entering some kind of purgatory.
The unique and intriguing poetry of Barry Lamb is set to rich instrumentation by Barry and Peter Ashby, intertwined with the vocal textures of Barry and Georgia Lamb. This is both an enchanting and very appealing little concept EP that you want to put on repeat play until you catch those astral straws you’ve been grasping at. This is beautiful but elusive song construction. Guitars, flutes, keyboards and all manner of instruments whisked up into a Winter Solstice brew for those with ears to hear.
It’s for you dear listener to decide for yourself what it all means.

Two Headed Emperor – Deracination - Falling A Records
The definition of deracinate is to pull out by the roots; uproot, to displace from one's native or accustomed environment. I have followed the progress of Two Headed Emperor since the band’s inception and I eagerly await each new release. Every album is different. Up till now, I’ve always associated the music of Two Headed Emperor with the sea but with this new album, Deracination we are going otherworldly, if not interplanetary. There is a real depth to this Hammond organ led, classic Prog Rock but it’s much more than that. From the opening chords of the Hammond, I’m reminded of Vincent Crane from Atomic Rooster. It’s that same feeling tingling up my spine when I first heard the opening sequence to “Devil’s Answer” back in the mists of time.
The vocal performances from Barry Lamb are up front, mournful, heartfelt and unique. The lyrics are as always interesting and intriguing. Fantastic, inventive guitar from Peter Ashby, his guitar playing is reminiscent of Zal Clemlinson from the superb Glaswegian band Tear Gas and early Gary Moore from his days with Irish band Skid Row. Also Jimmy Page comes to mind, in his wilder moments. Once again, Georgia Lamb performs excellent, atmospheric and ethereal vocals that really enhance the mood, reminding me of the female vocalists in Hatfield & the North.
There are haunting wind instrument sounds too, adding another dimension. Sitar vibes and strange outer space atmospheres, weird, indescribable alien monster sounds rising to the musical surface, at times seeming like they are ready to devour the music. Constantly lurking in the background and then coming to the fore. These strange sounds mirror the sentiment of the words or am I just being carried along on another trip into that other land of the Two Headed Emperor?
There are modern technological elements to the sound to and a New Wave sensibility that further enhances the originality of the conceptual sonic landscape of Two Headed Emperor. In a word, “Deracination” is a classic and the more you hear the album, the more you hear in it. It’s a treat for those with the ears to hear.

Two Headed Emperor – Omnishambles – Falling A Records
The definition of omnishambles is a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations. Although this could be an excellent observation on the state of the UK right now, it is in fact the title of the new album by Two Headed Emperor.
Both eccentric and a modern classic, it is as always eclectic in nature in the band’s quest for the unique and original in a contemporary prog rock setting. It is impossible to pin down but reminiscent of so many musical legends. King Crimson, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Fall, The Canterbury scene come to mind. Stop! This list could go on and on.
Suffice to say that there are so many musical influences being stirred around in the Two Headed Emperor’s sonic melting pot. Progressive music with a New Wave edge, giving every track real power.
Excellent heartfelt lyrics/poetry from Barry Lamb backed up by strong melodies and as always truly original and atmospheric musical instrumentation and textures. In depth analysis of what it’s like living in this current strange and uncertain world. Fantastic guitar work from Peter Ashby, always amazingly inventive and interesting. The finale in the form of “Treading On Eggshells” has a blistering guitar solo accompanied by fantastic keyboards. In fact, throughout the album there are lush keyboards, piano and analogue synth sounds, not forgetting the trusty mellotron! There is a good deal of very good bass playing too, anchoring everything down and pushing the rhythms along nicely.
Invention is the key word here, imagination and lots of attention to detail in the production. Two Headed Emperor take you to another place, often strange and otherworldly but don’t worry, no matter how weird or scary it might get, you will always be reassured. Catchy melody lines alongside psychedelic sound excursions compliment the progressive and New Wave elements so well, taking us on a journey through many aural delights for the senses. Music to make you think and feel, not to mention the vital experience of making the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. A real treat for the ears and definitely not to be missed!

Two Headed Emperor – Transference and Transgression – Falling A Records
The… enigma, the… unexpected… the otherworldly… summoning up the spirit of classic, British Progressive rock. Scary enough for King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Egg and so many more but this is a modern fusion of these influences, incorporating musical storytelling of the highest order. Firstly, I must make one thing clear, I love this band having listened to their musical output since the band’s inception and the unique creative force that is Two Headed Emperor. Superb instrumentation from the irrepressible Barry Lamb and Peter Ashby. These two musicians have a superb chemistry between them. Everything fits so smoothly into complex arrangements, both organically and thoughtfully constructed. Fantastically imaginative playing and as always, Barry’s vocal delivery is unique as he paints the contemporary imagery. Lyrically hitting the listener with home truths from the off with a tremendous riff. Frank Zappa meets Soft Machine meets King Crimson. Quite a feat but you have to understand that this band are expert musical jugglers. Two Headed Emperor create a sound that it truly intriguing. Do yourself a favour, buy this album and help to keep the soul of imaginative rock alive.

Two Headed Emperor – Tales From A Mariners Pen – Falling A Records
Some amazing cosmological force just gave the Two Headed Emperor a box of the most incredible paints infusing magic powers in order to create a unique musical landscape.
Uncompromising wherein creativity is king and the spirit of Neptune has been summoned from the depths of the sea. Following hot on the heels of their fantastic previous work “Goldhanger Creek”, “Tales From a Mariner’s Pen” is Two Headed Emperor’s masterpiece.
From the first few bars of the first song on the CD I was hooked and drawn into the strange and fascinating world of the Two Headed Emperor. In fact, half way through the track I started the CD again to verify what I had just heard. These songs are definitely tales of the unexpected, progressive music for the modern age and full of surprises. This album is unlike anything else you will hear right now.
The music is so perfectly suited to the picturesque and intriguing poetry of Barry Lamb. Indeed Barry and Peter Ashby, with the addition of the delightful vocals of Georgia Lamb have put together complex musical structures. In fact, there are more ideas in one song here than a lot of artists manage to incorporate into a whole album. Otherworldly and impossible to define, these songs will have the hairs standing up on the back of your neck.
What we have here is assured experimentalism and exceptional playing on all kinds of instruments performed by musicians with a rich musical palette, incorporating light, emotive, exquisite orchestral arrangements in a rock setting. A delicate world, conjured up out of the ether by a truly class band.
The musical integrity of Two Headed Emperor is so important in these strange and uncertain times to compensate for the cultural deficit we are currently experiencing where art is secondary to the widespread emphasis of the worship of mammon. Do yourself a favour and add this album to your collection. You won’t be disappointed.

Two Headed Emperor – Goldhanger Creek – Falling A Records
Two Headed Emperor continue to grow in stature as a musical force in the modern underground music scene. Invention is the key word here and the seeking of expression, mystical songs with sophisticated arrangements. Rich instrumentation, transporting us into the unique musical universe of The Two Headed Emperor. Poetic imagery delivered honestly and straight from the heart.
There are many truly beautiful moments on this album with its at times groove based moods, solid bass and drums, excellent guitar work with gritty riffs, colourful acoustic guitar accompaniment and biting guitar solos. Cajun blues meets experimental prog rock with tasteful interjections of keyboards reminiscent of all those Hammond organ led rock bands that we knew and loved in the 1970s. The vocals are superbly delivered throughout the album creating an atmosphere that is uniquely Barry Lamb, this time round augmented by the quite haunting vocals of Georgia Lamb creating an excellent counter point, a fine addition to the band.
There are so many ideas here, lovingly expressed by Barry and the other mainstay, the inimitable Peter Ashby. Creative, thoughtful and tasteful mixing makes for a captivating aural experience. Truly magical and possibly their best album yet. “Misty morning and quiet waters flow. You ride the black swan…”

Two Headed Emperor - Shaman Of The Snow EP - Falling A Records
Two Headed Emperor's Christmas EP, "Shaman Of the Snow," is a delightful surprise that captures the essence of an intriguing seasonal single. The title track and "The Alchemist's Christmas Tipple" harken back to the classics like Jethro Tull's "Ring Out, Solstice Bells" and Greg Lake's "I Believe In Father Christmas." These songs have a quintessentially English charm, infused with strong folk rock influences. The ethereal backing vocals by Georgia Lamb add a magical touch, making these tracks feel like fireside tales of mysterious solstice legends.
"The Shaman Of the Snow" explores the Pagan origins of the Winter solstice and the disconnect it has with its Christian appropriation, delving into the descent of the holiday into debauchery and materialism—a theme that resonates in a world losing touch with its spiritual essence.
Barry Lamb's reflections on the tracks provide valuable insight into the EP's creation and evolution over the years. He discusses the initial inspiration in the 1980s, the influence of conversations with fellow musicians, and the song's evolution through various stages of the band's career. The track "Shaman Of the Snow" underwent fine-tuning of lyrics and ideas over time, finally finding its home in Two Headed Emperor's repertoire.
The EP's journey from inception to realization is a testament to the band's commitment to their artistic vision. Barry Lamb's acknowledgment of the decade-long journey and the decision to feature Pete's mellower, folk-inspired vocals on the EP's final rendition demonstrates the band's meticulous approach to their craft. "Shaman Of the Snow" ultimately aligns seamlessly with the Two Headed Emperor body of work, providing a thought-provoking and musically enchanting addition to their discography.
In conclusion, "Shaman Of the Snow" is a heartfelt and introspective Christmas EP that not only pays homage to the great Christmas records of the past but also offers a unique perspective on the winter solstice and the modern celebration of Christmas. It's a testament to Two Headed Emperor's artistic evolution and their ability to bring a long-nurtured idea to life with passion and precision. This EP is a must-listen for fans of the band and those seeking a fresh take on seasonal music with a touch of English folk rock magic.

Two Headed Emperor - The Breath Of Disunity - Falling A Records
"The Breath Of Disunity" by Two Headed Emperor is a mesmerizing departure from their earlier album, "The Happy Medium and a Depressed Conjurer." While the album showcased a fusion of progressive rock, post-punk, experimental, and krautrock influences, this single takes a compelling detour into the realm of electronica with subtle jazz undertones.
What sets "The Breath Of Disunity" apart is its ability to maintain a delicate connection to the album while delving into a different sonic territory. This track evokes a profound sense of emotion, resonating with themes of isolation, loneliness, sadness, and a palpable discontent with contemporary culture and political disillusionment. However, rather than succumbing to the expected outpouring of vitriolic rage, the song bravely embraces its discomfort and questions the world around it.
The instrumentation in "The Breath Of Disunity" is hauntingly beautiful, with a melody that feels like the soundtrack to a late-night bar scene. The lyrics, too, are poignant, offering a thoughtful reflection on the complex emotions and frustrations of our times. This single is a true gem that deserves significant attention for its ability to provoke introspection and stir deep emotions. It's a testament to Two Headed Emperor's versatility and sense of musical adventure.

Two Headed Emperor - The Happy Medium And A Depressed Conjurer - Falling A Records
"The Two Headed Emperor makes me think of bands creating music that truly meant something in decades gone by. To name but a few, this album reminded me at times of Genesis, Peter Hammill & Van der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Egg, Soft Machine, The Fall, Captain Beefheart, Faust, Can, etc etc. Think of the best aspects of these bands, fused together with a New Wave edge and it will give you some idea of where The Two Headed Emperor is coming from. The implementation of new technology enhancing ideas of old is admirable and superbly executed. Lyrically excellent, most definitely contemporary and topical. Quite simply, an astonishing achievement, positively brimming over with ideas and musical concepts"
