I have often departed from the constraints of electronic music, particularly when collaborating with other more gifted musicians than myself. I have dabbled a lot with natural sounds, acoustic work or even tape loops. I have flirted with rock, jazz, folk whilst remaining anchored in the avant-garde and experimental world that I tend to inhabit but this album has changed timbres and tones several times since I began work on the project at the end of 2009.
My initial plan was to do an album of classical interpretations and after tackling Ravel's Bolero with only the Mellotron, Hammond Organ and EWI (Wind synth), I felt it was a little ambitious and not exactly the journey I was on at the time. I then dabbled further into the world of avant garde as a possible extension to my previous three albums but after some tracks which became known as as the "Mr. Cloud demo's" I decided that it sounded too sterile.
It was whilst I was experimenting with dubstep and DnB as I played with stems and loops that had been given to me by a variety of musicians that I rediscovered my passion for jazz and started creating some impromptu jazz with some of these loops. These tracks were musically spawned from those sessions with an ensemble which became affectionately known as The Cloud Quartet.
This collection of tunes was developed between 2011 - 2013. Some of them remained in the form that they were recorded and some I revisited older ideas and integrated them. Having ventured into the world of drum & bass, ambient and dubstep plus the countless electro meanderings, twists and turns, you may hear remnants of these influences in the mix of the final recordings.
The project has taken several titles over the time most notably it had the affectionate working title of "Mister Cloud meets Miss Tique" but eventually I settled on "Love Note" as it captures all I have been pursuing on this journey both musically and conceptually.
It finally began to come into focus and fruition at the end of August 2013 and the following four months were spent refining it for release.
In my recent recording history geography has played an important part in influencing my music. "It's all about purpose" (2004) was heavily influenced by Northern European industrial recordings, "Observations of Istanbul" (2005) was influenced by the heartbeat of Istanbul and partly recorded there and "...this is" was heavily influenced by a pastoral picture of England with a rather bleak apocalyptic outlook. This album has been heavily influenced by my Eastern European connections and particularly the City of Bucharest which is a City I have grown to love and appreciate very much.
The album was conceived, recorded and developed in several locations. Bucharest, Woodford Green (Essex), Seasalter (Kent) & Borth (Wales)
It has been a difficult album to deliver and has taken a lot longer than I imagined it would but I think it tells the story that I intended it to tell with some depth and expression.
This is what I wrote as I grappled with it whilst in the mountains of Wales in the late Summer of 2013.
"It's a deeply personal album about part of my life that I am still trying to come to terms with and make sense of. I have not had the courage the define it either musically or conceptually yet, so even after 3 years I am still very much at the sketchpad stage. It's certainly my deepest work as it deals with many layers from my spiritual battles, to the defining of love, the feelings of loss, a battle between light and darkness and the synchronicity of how a chance meeting can leave fingerprints all over your heart, mind, body, soul and spirit"
