- Wavis O'Shave - Fivers Here (Download)
We teamed up with post punk comic legend Wavis O'Shave one last time to create this parody and 21st century interpretation of David Bowie's song "Five Years".
Wavis first appeared on the scene with the underground hit "Dennis Smokes Tabs", championed by the great John Peel, he subsequently appeared in early editions of Viz Comic and then Channel 4's culture defining TV show "The Tube" as several different comic personas, perhaps most notably "The Hard" whose catchphrase "Felt Nowt" has emblazoned many a T shirt over the years. Other characters were "The Non Sweary Puppet Show", "Mr Stary oot" , "Mr Ordinary Powder" and "Foffo Spearjig".
Wavis has been described as "Alice Cooper with concusion" and "The Goons meet Kraftwerk". One writer claimed that he was Spike Milligan's secret love child by virgin birth.
We have been working with Wavis since the early years, maybe it was our South Shields roots or perhaps our love of absurdity but we ourselves often providing musical backing for his misadventure and releasing cult LP's such as "Texican Raveloni (Bedside Songs For Problem Children)" and "Nursery rhymes Of The Apocalypse (potty dotty ditties of the deft and daft)"... original copies of these rarities are highly sought after and exchange hands for more than a fiver.
Deconstructing and reconstructing this song in preparation for Wavis adding his spin on it, helped me appreciate even more how beautifully crafted it is and what genius Bowie's original lyrics are. How Pete hammered my woodwind contribution into shape is one of life's great mysteries. Strangely enough "Ziggy Stardust" was never my favourite David Bowie album but this gave me new appreciation for it.
But that's it... Wavis' swansong, he's outta here ... better get the washing in.
