Beloved Alice – A Tale Of Breadcrumbs – Falling A Records
“A Tale Of Breadcrumbs”, the shockingly good new album by Beloved Alice on Falling A Records was recorded at Polestar, the studio in Newcastle Upon Tyne that is the home of legendary North East of England New Wave band Penetration, featuring Pauline Murray. The album was produced by Beloved Alice in conjunction with Pauline’s son Alex Blamire and a very fine job they have done too.
Eleven blistering tracks of powerful New Wave music for the 2020s.
Led by fantastic vocalist Alison Cowie, this is music to make you think and feel. Every track is a winner. Powered along by the “take no prisoners” drumming of Blacky Blackburn, the truly inventive playing of ex Punishment Of Luxury guitarist Mick Emerson (Red Helmet on the first Punilux single) and the solid bass playing of Paul Torkington.
Listening to “A Tale Of Breadcrumbs” reminds me of the first time I heard Penetration or Siouxsie & The Banshees with a liberal amount of Marianne Faithful (circa “Broken English”) thrown in but this is in a modern setting, taking in so many other influences. If you haven’t heard Beloved Alice yet, do yourself a favour and grab a copy of the album. This is a band to be discovered. You will not be disappointed.
Tim Jones – July 2021.
