Wavis O'Shave collided with the music industry in 1979 with the release of a 4 track EP "Denis Smokes Tabs /John is a Figroll", on an indie label called Company Records based in Lincoln, his surreal lyrics drawing a respectable amount of attention from the NME and SOUNDS in particular.
Kudos include being referred to as 'The illegitimate love child of Spike Milligan by virgin birth', 'Alice Cooper with concussion' and 'Kraftwerk meets the Goons'.
Wavis is a fellow native of South Shields and we first connected in the early days of Viz Comic which was distributed via our mail order network and through the Falling A shop. Wavis became the Patron Saint of Viz Comic. After a national hit with his album 'Anna Ford's Bum' in 1980 and endorsed by the lovely newreader herself, Wavis did a Dr Who regeneration into Foffo Spearjig who went on to feature on Channel 4's live music programme THE TUBE from 1982-87.
His comedy characters earned him a cult status...The Hard, Mr Ordinary Powder and Mr Starey Oot. Wavis/Foffo released 'Tie your laces tight', a single on London Eccentric records in 1982 which featured on the Falling A released "Texican Raveloni (Bedtime songs for problem children)". We also included this unique version of "The Hard" on our comedy cassette "Up The Yama Yama".
In 2004, we released another album by Wavis called "Nursery Rhymes Of The Apocalypse", he also collaborated with the short lived Fictional Rage and we released an updated version of "Mauve Shoes Are Awful" which quite bizarrely became an underground hit in Finland!
