The current wave of releases from the Stone Premonitions archives continues with the release of Songularity by Census Of Hallucinations. This collection of fan and reviewer picks is a striking reminder of how important this band may still become in the annals of underground rock music history. Census of Hallucinations arrived on the scene just about on time to usher in the new millennium. They came with a message of warning but at the same time underpinned with a hope that we might just wake up on time and that there are people out there in the world wanting to make a positive difference. Their indignation and exasperation coming through with a strength of conviction in their lyrics and felt in a very caustic way in their music. Twenty years on the music of Census Of Hallucinations is perhaps more culturally relevant than ever both in terms of the music and the message. This is edgy, angry music underpinned with optimism and hope. There are moments of beauty and moments of fierce momentum. It's a melting pot of spacerock, krautrock, folk, psychedelic and progressive music with plenty of surprises along the way. CofH are true craftsmen honing their trade against a backdrop of intensive systematization.
A word from the band themselves ...
Songularity is the sister album to the recently released Instrumentality on the Falling A label. Whereas Instrumentality featured the best of the most recent Census Of Hallucinations instrumental tracks, Songularity showcases what the band consider to be some of their best songs both old and new. In addition, many of these songs have proved to be the most popular by reviewers of the band’s work, the ones that have received the most airplay on Independent radio stations and may have appeared on compilation albums. Songularity is also a commentary and sad indictment of the current political climate and the challenging era in which we live. In this regard, the band believes that its release is timely. There is no such thing as coincidence…
