“Caustic teenage angst dressed in punk art pop clothing”
- Social Comment fanzine (1979)
"Reminiscent of a New Wave Captain Beefheart"
- Tim Jones, Alchemical Radio (2014)
1977 - 1981
Frenzid Melon were an avant-punk, art rock bedroom band that released 7 cassette albums plus a posthumous album of previously unreleased material in 1982. They briefly attracted the attention of Virgin Records and gained some very favourable reviews in fanzines and music press of the day.
This anthology of salvaged recordings is a pithy cultural window into the early years of cassette culture and the diy ethos of punk and New Wave. It is the story of a bedroom band. A soundtrack to growing up in a seaside resort during those incredible days of change that the culture of punk rock spawned ! The grumblings of disaffected adolescence embodied in magnificent lo fi.
Founder members Barry Lamb and Peter Ashby went on to become major contributors in the world of cassette culture by forming the Falling A label and distribution network for diy cassettes and fanzines through to the late 1980’s.
Ashby & Lamb have worked together at numerous junctures over the past 37 years. Frenzid Melon eventually morphed into the insane picnic. Peter Ashby had a brief excursion as the bassist with Spasmodic Caress who contributed to the 4ad “Presage(s)” 12” mini album whilst lamb focused more on his own experimental, avant-garde cassette releases. In the last decade they have worked together with Jasun Martz (ex- Frank Zappa, Michael Jackson), Keith Levene (ex- PiL), Wavis O’Shave & Tor Cesay (ex- Mongrel) as well as their own projects.
