Here's an early review
Two Headed Emperor – Ash Neon & Whisky – Falling A Records
The new album Ash Neon & Whisky is yet another brilliant and innovative offering from the mighty Two Headed Emperor. This is progressive music in the true sense of the word as Frank Zappa would describe it.
The Two Headed Emperor Magic Band! Captain Beefheart meets Fairport Convention meets Henry Cow? Yes, you heard that right!
There’s much more to this album than that though. Multi-instrumentalists Barry Lamb and Peter Ashby have again excelled themselves to create a superbly atmospheric and challenging set of songs. A plethora of instruments and field recordings create a wide musical landscape. It is almost impossible to predict what will happen from one composition to the next, making for an extremely interesting aural experience and musical excursion, both experimental and rhythmic.
Passionate and anguished vocal delivery from Barry Lamb comments on the dystopian times we are living through. His committed, uncompromising vocals are always poetic, the lyrics having a post apocalyptic and powerful feel, like a call from the wild. Fantastic and inventive guitar from Peter Ashby often conjures up an unexpected bluesy ingredient through his use of slide guitar techniques, adding an extra dimension to the avant-garde aspects of the music that is encapsulated in the fine CD artwork created by Alex Ashby. There are a lot of clever musical concepts here.
I love the way that the intriguing song Broken Clockwork ends for example. Always a melting pot of extraordinary ideas, Ash Neon & Whisky is another fantastic addition to the ever expanding Two Headed Emperor catalogue, enabled by the superb Falling A record label. Do yourself a favour, buy this CD and support true independent music for modern times.
