Here's what Jerry Kranitz had to say ...
‘Ash, Neon & Whiskey’, the latest from Barry Lamb and Peter John Ashby’s Two Headed Emperor. These guys have been recording together for nearly 50 years! Like their last album, the music is difficult to describe, which is always a good thing.
These are ‘songs’, vocal numbers, supported by bizarrely awesome music. It often mixes pleasant melodies with Captain Beefhearty dissonant blues. And while there is lots of Beefheart in the guitar, these guys create their own brand of art damaged blues. If Two Headed Emperor ever contributed to an inspired-by ‘Trout Mask Replica’ compilation, ‘Delta Dust Storm’ would be my choice. But I’m also at times hearing what feels like the punkier and more accessible end of the avant-prog/RIO spectrum. Aksak Maboul and song-oriented Henry Cow sorta/kinda come to mind. They would definitely fit comfortably with the creatively outside the box artists that appear on the Pumf label Godspunk compilations.
Do I sound all over the place with these descriptions? Ya gotta hear it for yourself.
